Cut flowers are experiencing a resurgence through sustainable locally grown flowers and driving demand for new and specialty cut flower cultivars.

Not sure how the best cut flowers are chosen?

NC State University’s Cut Flowers and Postharvest Floriculture Program has celebrated its 25th-year milestone in collaboration with the Association of Specialty Cut Flower Growers (ASCFG) and the National Cut Flower Trials. The national trials are a collective effort from growers all over the United States and Canada.

While a broad variety of cultivars and conditions are tested each year, each test site does specialize in a few species. The experiments serve a dual purpose: 1) to determine whether a cultivar, no matter how great they look or easy to produce, will last long enough after harvest to be marketable; and 2) to test the effect of hydration and holding solutions (i.e . flower foods and preservatives) on vase life.
